I’m an experienced, award-winning & award-nominated DIRECTOR, PRODUCER & WRITER of a number of acclaimed 60-minute documentary films for BBC Television & Sky Arts – some are considered the definitive programme on the subject.
My main areas are: 20TH CENTURY MUSIC, POPULAR CULTURE, HISTORY, POLITICS & THE ARTS. The films I make often show how these subjects are related.
The films I’ve directed are of a consistently high standard. They are intelligent, accessible and known for their visual imagination & emotional impact.
I’ve filmed in a number of foreign locations – Cuba, Africa, Puerto Rico, Europe & the USA. I’ve also directed dramatic reconstructions and interviewed a very wide range of contributors. I’m an ideas person and the documentaries I’ve directed have often been commissioned from my own original treatments.
What originally inspired me to enter this world were classic documentaries like the BBC’s UNDER THE SUN series, PBS’s civil rights opus EYES ON THE PRIZE, the tale of two teenage aspiring basketball players in HOOP DREAMS, the BBC’s iconic ARENA series, and James Marsh’s very first film, TROUBLE MAN: THE LAST YEARS OF MARVIN GAYE
